Fond Memories
The following is a biographical sketch about me and my photographic background and experiences; who I am and why I love macrophotography. My camera of choice for all my macro work is the Nikon 46 MP DSLR D850 Pro camera.
I fondly recall receiving his first camera when I was twelve. It was just a simple Brownie box camera by Kodak (see photo inset), and one had to carefully load the camera with paper-backed film on a plastic spool. Nevertheless, even then I was intrigued by the idea that a moment in time could be recorded forever on a piece of acetate film. That was the moment, maybe at some subconscious level, when I knew photography would play a major role in my life.
I was born and raised on Long Island, about 60 miles from New York City. During my high school years and as a young adult, I often boarded the commuter train of the Long Island Railroad to spend weekends in this visual arts capital of the world. It was in this environment that I was molded by the magic of photography. To me, the camera is a time machine! I often recall, as a young boy, how I thrilled at shooting pictures of my grandmother stitching clothes on her old foot-pedaled Singer sewing machine and often revisiting that moment months—even years—later. When my grandmother passed away, I was still able to visit her thanks to my time machine.
In my high school years, I was obsessed with the fine arts and took as many art appreciation courses as was available, and continued pursuing my addiction to photography through active participation in camera clubs and learning darkroom development techniques. After high school, I persisted in my love of the photographic arts by enrolling in professional photography programs and college-level art courses, and participating in photographic competitions. Having received many ribbons and awards for my photographic work, I soon began exhibiting my images to the general public.
A Quest for Photographic Excellence
It was not until 1983, however, that he began my quest for photographic excellence, and I have since worn many hats within the photography and publishing industry: Fine art photographer, publications manager, photo illustrator, Portfolio magazine executive editor, photography book author, photography instructor, and professional photo critic. My critical evaluations and commentaries on exhibited photographic works in general have been received with much enthusiasm. Within the past decade, I had become somewhat obsessed with macrophotography and received recognition for my limited-edition macro images. My macro work is marketed to patrons of the arts and collectors of investment prints throughout North America. My photo illustrations have graced the interior walls of many public and corporate buildings.
My Passion for Shooting Macro Images
After nearly two decades of shooting landscape and wildlife photographs, I discovered my passion for macrophotography in a small photo gallery in San Francisco. I loved shooting in the great outdoors and under natural lighting, which is what attracted me to wildlife photography. As he walked into that photo gallery in San Francisco in 2014, I found myself completely surrounded and intrigued by a magnificent display of macro images that included bugs, bees, and butterflies. I was immediately consumed by magnificently detailed multifaceted eyes looking back at me, exquisitely intricate designs of beautifully colored and delicate wings, and an entire world that very few people ever get to see. That's when the macro "bug" bit—excuse the pun that best describes my passion for shooting tiny lifeforms—and fired up my imagination. That's when I realized I wanted to specialize in macrophotography work.
Over the past decade, I have found much benefit to shooting macro photographs and quickly realized its advantages over other photography genres. For an overview of some of these advantages, click on the Why Macrophotography link located on the main menu bar at the top of this web page.
